The government has laid out plans to support construction and infrastructural projects in light of the COVID-19 outbreak. Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Nadhim Zahawi stated that the notice to proceed with HS2, which was made last week, showed the government’s commitment to spending on infrastructure.
The construction minister believes getting jobs on site faster is necessary to inject life into the economy, following the COVID-19 related slowdown. As things currently stand, Zadhawi claimed around £300m of loans per day were being agreed through the loan schemes for SMEs and large businesses. The government continues to review its support measures over the coming weeks but Zadhawi said: “We are committed to ensuring a vibrant and thriving construction sector emerges from this crisis, so that it can make a really positive contribution [to the economy].”
